Harvard University and the University of Florida are both planning to offer new classes that will look at how Taylor Swift has changed music and society today. A course at Harvard called “Taylor Swift and Her World” will be taught by Professor Stephanie Burt and will look at the singer’s music, lyrics, and societal significance.
The University of Florida’s Melina Jimenez will teach “Musical Storytelling with Taylor Swift and Other Iconic Female Artists,” which will look at the stories of famous singers like Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, and Dolly Parton. This isn’t just happening with Taylor Swift. Harry Styles, who used to be in One Direction, had his own course at Texas State University. Nicki Minaj had her own class at UC Berkeley, and Bad Bunny had her own course at San Diego State. It’s becoming more and more popular in academia to break down the influence and artistry of modern music stars.
