BNP leader Nabi Ullah & 7 others arrested over Gopibagh train fire allegations

Police have arrested Nabi Ullah Nabi, the joint convenor of Dhaka South, and seven other party members on suspicion that they had something to do with the fire on the Benapole Express train on January 6. The other people who were arrested are Md Hasan Ahmed, Md Russell, Delowar Hakeem Biplab, Md Salauddin, and Md Kabir. Around 12:30 a.m. on January 6, Nabi Ullah was arrested at his home in Sector 11 of Uttara.

A virtual meeting was held on January 4 with the convenor of Metropolitan South Jubo Dal, Khandkar Enam, Member Secretary Robiul Islam Noyon, Joint Convenor MA Gaffar, Joint Convenor Iqbal Hossain Bablu, Office Secretary Shahjahan Chowdhury, and the team leaders of eight Dakshin Jubo Dal teams. For the two main plans, they told leaders and activists from the Ward and Thana Jubo Dal to do destructive things on January 5, 6, and 7. These included setting fire to vehicles and temporary election camps for candidates, throwing explosives near polling places, and other destructive things.

Sources in the BNP said that police raided the homes of several BNP leaders, such as Engineer Ishrak Hossain in Gopibagh, Anam Saiful Islam in Dholaipar, AGM Shamsul Haq in Baridhara, and Mojammel Hossain Matir in Kafrul. Friday night, someone set fire to the Benapole Express train in the Gopibagh area of Sayedabad. At least four people on board died.
