BUET’s “tomtoms/bimans/autos” to take streets of Paltan, DMD and Uttara

BUET’s battery-powered three-wheeled rickshaws will initially operate in Paltan and Dhanmondi under Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), and in Uttara under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), according to Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. He made this announcement on Saturday (June 28) during the inauguration of a training program for drivers held at the DNCC Nagar Bhaban.

DNCC Administrator Mohammad Ejaz stated, “These new rickshaws will start operating from the beginning of August. Unauthorized rickshaws will gradually be removed from both zones.”

He further added, “Work is underway on establishing charging points so that rickshaws can be charged only at approved locations. Once these three-wheeled rickshaws are launched, it will be possible to bring discipline to Dhaka city’s transport system.”

Out of 300 selected trainers for the rickshaw driving program, the Department of Youth Development has provided a list of 200. Among them, 175 are students who took part in the anti-discrimination movement and have received training on traffic management. The remaining 100 are representatives from the police traffic department.
