X, formerly known as Twitter, is introducing a $1 per year subscription for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines as part of a “Not A Bot” program aimed at reducing spam and bot activity.

It’s not clear why this subscription is limited to web users and these two countries. Existing users can continue to use the platform for free or subscribe to X’s main $8 per month subscription. Elon Musk, who oversees X, believes that charging a fee will deter bot activity on the platform.
