Legal notice served to ban the production, import and distribution of e-cigarettes

Concerned authorities have been served a legal notice to ban the manufacture, import, distribution, marketing, and use of electronic cigarettes in Bangladesh. The secretaries of the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Commerce, and Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs have been served with the legal notice. Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir, representing the human rights organization Law and Life Foundation Trust, delivered the legal notice on Monday on behalf of the Supreme Court.

The notice mentioned that at least 47 countries including Brazil, Singapore, China, Bhutan, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Argentina, Bhutan, India have already banned the production, marketing and use of e-cigarettes in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO). If necessary action is not taken before seven days of receiving the notice, a case will be filed in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in public interest and directions will be looked for to stop e-cigarettes, said the legal notice. On the other hand, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and online companies like Daraz have been asked to cease the commercializing of e-cigarettes.
