An original 1977 ‘Star Wars’ X-Wing model, considered lost for decades, was sold at auction for an astounding $3.13 million, far exceeding its $400,000 starting bid.
The 1:24 scale model, one of four “hero” models made for close-up shots in the original film, was rediscovered in the collection of the late Hollywood modelmaker, Greg Jein. Jein’s friends found it in his garage among numerous Hollywood memorabilia items. The winning bidder, who remained anonymous, competed with another collector, and the X-wing’s sale price exceeded the previous year’s record of $2.4 million for a similar model.
