Singer Rezwana Choudhury Bannya to get India’s Padma Shri Award

Rezwana Choudhury Bannya, a famous Rabindra Sangeet singer, has been given the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award. The Indian government released a list of winners for the Padma Awards on Thursday. The singer from Bangladesh is on the list. Every year on January 26, India’s Republic Day, the list is made public. This year, Bannya is the only person from Bangladesh on the list. She was honored for “distinguished service” in the area of art.

Bannya, who is the founder of music education institute Surer Dhara, has written multiple books on Tagore’s music. She was also given the ‘Bangabhushan’ by the West Bengal government & the Feroza Begum Memorial Gold Medal. Bangladesh has recognised Bannya’s contributions to music and her contribution to spreading Rabindranath Tagore’s music with an Independence Award in 2016.
