Nobel Peace Prize winner Prof. Muhammad Yunus and three other top executives at Grameen Telecom were given six months in jail today for breaking labor laws. The decision was made by Sheikh Merina Sultana, who is the head of the Third Labour Court of Dhaka. After the verdict, Yunus and the other three officials each came forward with their own bail requests. The judge approved their requests and freed them for one month.
The case was brought to court on September 9, 2021, by Labor Inspector (General) SM Arifuzzaman of the Inspection for Factories and Establishments Department. Case records say that on August 16, 2021, IFED officials investigated in the office of Grameen Telecom in Mirpur, which is in the capital, and found several violations of labor laws.

Starting December 31, all 16 stations on the Uttara-Motijheel section of the country’s first metro train service will be open to the public. Shahbagh and Karwan Bazar are the last two stations that need to be opened. Manager of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), MAN Siddique, told reporters about the opening this afternoon at a press conference in the city.
The service will be open from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM on the Agargaon-Motijheel section and 7:30 AM to 8:30 PM on the Uttara-Agargaon section. In 2024, the time will be adjusted by the authority.
MAN Siddique said the entire Uttara-Motijheel route will be operating from morning to night in March 2024.

People who change their gender surgically will not get admission under ‘Transgender/Hijra’ quota in undergraduate programs of Dhaka University (DU). Apart from women and men, those who are of other sex by birth and nature, will get admission in this quota.
The University Grants Commission, through its 46th Annual Report, recommended special arrangements for higher education of Hijras to the government. DU last academic year (2022-23) introduced a quota called ‘Transgender/Hijra’ for transgenders to ensure access to higher education in undergraduate programs. Students have been opposing this quota since the publication of the admission circular for the academic year 2023-24 on 18 December. They demanded cancellation of this quota or removal of the word transgender from the quota.
Those who have voluntarily transitioned or who identify as a different gender despite having fully female or male body parts and characteristics will not fall under this quota. Those who are of gender diversity other than male and female by birth and nature will fall under this quota if they pass the admission test.

Scientists found that people in a village in the Dhar area of Madhya Pradesh had been worshiping dinosaur eggs for years without realizing it. The Narmada Valley area has been linked to the time of the dinosaurs.

The founder of the e-commerce company ‘Evaly’ Mohammad Rassel has been released from prison. He was released from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur at 6:30 PM on Monday. This was confirmed Shahjahan Ahmed, superintendent of Kashimpur, on Tuesday.
“When his bail documents arrived for all cases at the jail, he was released following proper verification,” he added. On September 16, 2021, the ex-CEO of Evaly was apprehended from his home in Mohammadpur on charges related to fraud. Both Rassel and the then chairman, Shamima Nasreen, Rassel’s wife, were arrested. Afterwards, Rassel’s wife was released on bail.
At least 4 people including a mother and her son have been killed as miscreants set fire on three compartments of Mohanganj Express train in Tejgaon. Fire service and civil defense said the act of arson took place some time after 5:00 AM on Tuesday. Of the deceased, two were identified as Nadira Akter Popy, 32, and her 3 year old son Yasin. The other two victims could not be identified.
Tejgaon police station’s officer in charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin listened to the passengers who said the train from Netrokona reached Dhaka in the morning. As it arrived near Khilket area, the passengers saw the fire. Afterwards the train was stopped at Tejgaon station. Fire service media cell’s official Shahjahan Shikder said 3 units of Tejgaon fire station brought the fire under control at around 6:45 AM. Police said the bodies were delivered to Kamalapur railway station.

In a big change from Vatican policy, Pope Francis officially permitted Roman Catholic priests bless same-sex couples on Monday. A document from the Vatican that was approved by the pope says that the blessings can happen as long as they are not part of normal Church rituals or liturgies and they are not done at the same time as a civil union.
The latest rule elaborates on the opening the pope made to blessing same-sex couples last October and marks a shift away from a 2021 rule from the Vatican doctrine office which banned any blessings saying God “cannot bless sin.”
But since July 2023, the doctrine department has been headed by Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernandez, an Argentinian prelate and ally of Francis, who has a different tone than that of his predecessors.
“When people ask for a blessing, an exhaustive moral analysis should not be placed as a precondition for giving it,” the declaration, authored by Cardinal Fernandez and another official, states. “The grace of God works in the lives of those who do not claim to be righteous but who acknowledge themselves humbly as sinners, like everyone else.”
The new ruling says it is allowing “the possibility of blessings for couples in irregular situations and for couples of the same sex” although says it is leaving decisions to “the prudent and fatherly discernment of ordained ministers.”
In a strange event, police in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, put a rat in a cage because they said the rodent drank alcohol that had been taken and kept at the Kotwali Police station. The police said that at least 60 bottles, or five dozen, were broken. They said that rats were to blame because they liked “sipping liquor.”
The “arrest” has added a strange twist to a case that was already going on. It has to do with someone from whom the cops confiscated the illegal alcohol. India has stopped onion exports till March to meet domestic demand. This has adversely affected the country’s onion market. Daily necessities have to be bought at almost twice the price. Meanwhile, due to India’s decision, onion-carrying cargo trucks have been stuck in the land ports of the Bangladesh-India border. As a result, importers and exporters are also affected. These onions have already started rotting on the truck due to the lack of permit.
At least 100 cargo trucks are waiting at the Bangladesh-India border with the orders of the importers of Bangladesh who had ordered onion before the export ban. The amount of onion waiting is more than 3 thousand tons. As soon as the trucks with these onions arrived at the border, the central government suddenly decided to stop the export. As a result, the trucks got stuck at the border. These onions have already started rotting and smelling bad. The online edition of India’s influential newspaper The Telegraph reported this information.
Truckloads of onions have started to stink in parts of West Bengal on the Indo-Bangladesh border. On the other hand, its price is increasing in Bangladesh. These trucks are stuck in the land port due to the sudden decision of the central government of India to stop exports. Exporters and freighters are also facing losses. Due to India’s decision, the price of onion in Bangladesh has increased from Tk 80 to Tk 200.
Today India confirmed a case of JN 1, a sub-variant of Covid-19 whose cases have risen in China and the United States. It has been detected in the state of Kerala.
The case was found in a RT-PCR positive sample from Karakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, in Kerala on December 8. The patient had mild symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and has since recovered from Covid-19, said Rajiv Bahl, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the prime body of medical research. Chief of INSACOG N.K. Arora said JN.1 variant was isolated and reported in November and is a subvariant of BA 2.86 of Covid-19. He said JN.1 was first detected in September 2023 in the US.

Not just economic indicators, Bangladesh is also doing great in social aspects. Average life expectancy of Bangladeshis is 72.4 years. Life expectancy is 72 years in India and around 69 years in Pakistan.
Bangladesh is also advancing in basic education. Literacy rate in both Bangladesh and India are 77 percent while 59 percent in Pakistan.

A gang was caught in Khulna selling dog meat disguised as beef and mutton. The meat they sold was used in different popular items like biryani, burgers, and grilled items in multiple local restaurants. Police arrested 5 members of this gang.
The arrests took place on Wednesday, December 13, in an abandoned building within the Khulna Polytechnic Institute (KPI) premises in the Khalishpur area of Khulna city. They were caught with the dog meat prepared for sale.
Among those arrested were the leader of the gang, a 16-year-old named Taj, son of Habibur Rahman from the North Zone-23 of Bangbasi Mor in Khalishpur, along with 37-year-old Abu Saeed, son of Qutb Ali from the No. 2 navigate area. Other members caught were Siam and Prem Sardar, both 16, from the Charer Hat area, and Abu Saeed, who participated in purchasing dog meat and selling biryani by the street. Two other accomplices are still at large.
The Officer-in-Charge at Khalishpur Police Station, Mohammad Anwar Hossain, mentioned that the operation was set off based on information regarding Abu Saeed, who had been selling biryani in the city for 30 taka only. The discovery of the dog meat selling operation was largely due to this intel.
